Matters arising from the minutes – Chairman advised that the committee had reviewed the rules brought in for Oxford Water, as we’ve now had several months fishing there. The barbless hook rule will be changed to barbless or micro barbed hooks and carp in matches will count at actual weight.
Chairman’s report
Let me start by asking, where has this last year gone since I took on the role at last year’s AGM? For me it has just flown by as I never expected the level of challenges we have endured.
As a committee we have been through some trying times throughout this year and I would like to express my sincere thanks to everyone for sticking with it when it would have been so easy just to step down. As you will hear, hopefully there is light at the end of the tunnel one way or another.
Let us begin with Oxford Water. At the last AGM it was announced that we would be allowed to take some stock tench from 11Acre, plant lilies in May 2015, extend the car park, work on our disabled pegs, investigate desilting options and remove some small fish to improve the quality of the lake. You may also have seen the 5yr plan that was drafted in conjunction with the EA and fisheries consultant Andrew Ellis. This was completed to show all concerned that we as a club were serious about our intentions to manage and improve the water, but sadly all of this has now changed, the things we had been promised and wanted to do are no longer allowed to go ahead. This decision was made by The National Trust after discussions surrounding our future. As you can imagine we were all disappointed with this news and it was certainly not what we wanted to hear. Having just said all that I am pleased to report The National Trust have recently extended the car park that will now fit up to 20 vehicles correctly parked.
There is however some good news to report. Firstly after much discussion we have been granted a new 3 year lease on the water at a greatly reduced rental cost, this offer being made after initially being granted a further 1 yr only again. The National Trust have also agreed that £1000 of the rent money from the 2014/2015 season can be used to add some stock fish, so with this money so we have purchased £1000 worth of crucian carp, in the 4 to 6 inch bracket. A decision was also taken that we would also add £300 to purchase bream of 8 to 10 inches. However, it was made clear that this is to be the only stocking allowed during the next 3 year lease period. Please do take as much opportunity as you can to enjoy fishing on the water, and let’s just hope some of our new fish show along with the bigger species hiding away in there. I have heard good reports of perch up to 3lb being caught recently which is fantastic news; I guess they are thriving on all that fry.
What’s our future?
To be honest having been in discussions with National Trust’s Surveyor, I don’t really know. We are to be reviewed at the end of the new 3 year period when a definitive answer will be given on our future at Stowe. It’s up to us all to show that we are a responsible caring club, looking after and respecting our environment and not giving any reason for The National Trust not to renew our lease. In light of this, as a committee we felt that we could not just sit still and await our fate and therefore took the decision to source additional waters for all members. We have hopefully come up with one very locally and would like to share our findings, photos and plans with you all at the AGM, as it’s all our futures. We also hope to hold an open morning in the near future for you all to come and see for yourselves just what we are hoping to take on. Please do try and make it to see for yourselves and give us your views and opinions.
Until then many thanks to you all for your continued support of Stowe Angling Club

Paul Hayden questioned what about access to the tench in the Japanese Gardens. Due to these being on a separate water course they would be subject to testing to allow us to move them and the National Trust will not allow killing of fish to happen.
Secretary’s report
When I agreed to take on the job of secretary for the club it was sold to me that I would only have to go to the monthly meetings and take the minutes. How much further from the truth could this be! The past 2 years have been challenging to say the least. As fast as we think we have everything sorted, the goal posts move and we are back to square one again, involving an awful lot of hours of hard work, several major headaches and one complete meltdown. However, we now have a promised 3 year lease for Oxford Water so I’m hoping things will settle down for a while; for the sanity of all of the committee I really hope so!
A lot of work has been carried out on Oxford Water over the year by the committee and a few club members, including tree clearing, completing, barking and numbering the swims, damming and repairing the side of the lake and building a safe bridge across the dam wall. James Hooker from the Environment Agency suggested that we write this all down and cost it out to show the investment we have made into the water. We were all amazed to see that this came to over 220 man hours, which when added to the cost of materials represents a cost of over £6000. Obviously the man hours were voluntary but it just shows how much this would potentially have cost the National Trust to do.
You will see that 2 swims by the bridge have now been removed by the National Trust. This is at the request of the school and we were given no choice in the matter. One has now been replaced down by the dam wall and we are still awaiting a response from the National Trust as to where the other peg will be placed. We are going to be allowed to do minimum maintenance over the 3 year lease, mainly reed cutting and swim clearance, so the lake is now pretty much the finished product. We are currently awaiting the final copy of the 3 year lease for signature from the National Trust Rural Surveyor. The content has been agreed and finalised so this should be completed within a couple of weeks.
As the water is very child friendly, we offered to take part in the AVDC come and try fish-a-longs that they were putting together. Graham has attended coaching training in preparation for this, but unfortunately they were postponed due to lack of numbers. This is something that may happen in the future.
The club has also been involved in trying to increase junior fishing, in conjunction with Brackley and Buckingham Clubs. This is an initiative which has been organised by Mark Fenning. For now, we have had to take a backwards step from this while the lease situation is being sorted.
Unfortunately, as the new season started last year one of our founder members, Peter Dyer, very sadly passed away. Pete was one of the original group who started the club and had been an active and committed member ever since. Pete served on the committee until 2012 and was always a font of interesting information and history of the club. He will be much missed. The committee are currently consulting with the old club committee as to the best way to commemorate Pete’s dedication to the club.
The club is continuing with the stretch of river at Radclive. There has been some work done there so swims are now more accessible.
The club continues its membership of the Angling Trust and is insured for liability via them. We also have access to Fish Legal through this and have needed their services this year to help with advice regarding the lease requirements. We have also received advice and assistance from James Roche at the Angling Trust in our negotiations with the National Trust, along with James Hooker from the Environment Agency and Andrew Ellis, Fisheries Consultant from AE Fisheries.
The committee made a grant application to the Angling Trust in February but was unsuccessful. This is in part due to the short tenure we have at Stowe. In reality, the grant cycle was a bit too soon for the club as our future plans are still in their infancy, so this is something we will try again in the future. The grant application process is quite exacting and time consuming, so thanks are due to Matt and Graham for doing the hard work on this.
Graham and Phil undertook a crayfish trapping programme over the summer months. Around 275 were removed in total, so nothing like the numbers experienced in the 11 Acre.
The committee now meets at Silverstone Football Club which is kindly made available to us by committee member Dennis Purr and his wife. A big thank you to them for hosting us.
Your committee has worked harder than ever this year to secure the future of this club and although we haven’t ended up with as satisfactory an outcome and we wanted, we have managed to keep fishing at Stowe for another 3 years, and will continue to battle on. A massive thank you is owed to every committee member but especially to Graham as Chairman, who in his first year has well and truly been thrown in at the deep end. Fortunately for us all, it appears he can swim!
Happy fishing.

Match Secretary’s report
The first season of match fishing on Oxford Water saw some very nice weights being caught. It was nice to see everyone who fished catching; I don’t think that there were any empty nets at the end of the matches. Everyone who fished them finished the season with total weights in double figures, even I managed to go all season without blanking which has been a good result for me. The highest weight caught for a match was 22lbs this included two Tench. The pole was the way to go as the top two anglers used them throughout the season.
The C. Atkins points cup was won by Dave Ridgway with 18 points beating Chris Hawkins by only one point, Dave also won the weight aggregate cup with an impressive total of 58lb 1oz.
We again for the second year running lost the home and away matches against Brackley; we will have to try and do better this coming season!
As I have been restricted now by the National Trust to holding my matches only in the school holidays we will be starting them on Oxford Water at the end of July, our only match in June will be away at Brackley on the 7th. This will give us a total of eight matches plus one against Brackley on our own waters in 2015 and two more of our own matches on the 29th May and the 5th June nex year 2016, please make a note of the last two in your diaries or check the web site.
David Gillman advised that there is now a confirmed away match at Winslow Club on 21st June added to the fixture list.

General Propositions – no general propositions have been received
Going Forward – Matt gave a presentation on the Radclive Lakes that the committee have been investigating. Matt, Graham and Phil Rose undertook a search of the area to try and locate alternative fishing venue for Stowe Angling Club, as the current future of the club is 3 years at Oxford Water. Beyond that we hope we will be able to continue at Stowe but we have no guarantee of this. To keep the club alive the committee decided that we should look for something else which can be run alongside our National Trust water.
Discussion took place on the lakes and what is happening at Stowe, position with National Trust and situation over the year. A member asked if the Radclive location flooded which Matt advised it didn’t but this member knows the location and has seen it in flood. Matt to investigate this further.
The lake complex consists of 4 lakes, which the committee are currently looking at as a small stock pond, match lake, main lake and top lake.
The proposition for the lake is maximum 7 ½ year lease, with a total lease cost of around £14,700 graduated from £1000 in the first year upwards. There is a lot of work to do on the location to turn this into the fishery that the committee want for the members. The committee proposal is for Andrew Ellis (AE Fisheries) to do this work on the club’s behalf. The cost for this is circa £6,500, which although a lot of money will mean the fishery is created in 1 week, instead of potentially a couple of years if we do it ourselves.
Figures were displayed which show that to do the project the club will need to raise additional funds.
John Harris questioned that he didn’t see any budget on the figures for stocking. The club is talking about wanting to put tench in the water but they are very expensive. Matt advised that plans are to buy smaller fish and feed them, which is what Andrew Ellis suggests and he has been incredibly successful with this.
Question was asked if there is an option for further 7 year extension to the lease. Matt confirmed he is asking for option to extend for further 7 years or possibility to buy.
Mark Fenning advised that he has received details of a new grant on offer via the Community Sports and Recreation Awards, and also advised to look into the Buckingham Community Fund.
Phil Rose proposed that the club goes for the new lake. Matt Mallett seconded. Members presented voted in agreement.
Any other business
Tim Hilsden proposed a vote of thanks to Graham and the committee for all their hard work and for giving the club a glimmer of hope for the future. Trevor Rodwell seconded this.
